Why are halloween masks and other things made of latex?

Im really kind of getting mad now because the stuff i want to get is latex (i.e. masks and other things). I am trying to find a slipknot mask but every one that i have seen says made of latex. Its now starting to get annoying so i have 3 questions.

    1) Why do they use latex in masks and other things (like gloves)?

    2) Does anyone know where i can find Slipknot masks or any halloween masks that are non latex? Also would it be possible to go to a halloween shop and get one custom made?

    3) What causes the allergic reaction to latex?

And if your wondering, Yes i am allergic to latex.

Feel free to answer as many of the questions you know or answer all of em.Anymore info you need just ask.Why are halloween masks and other things made of latex?
Well I can answer a couple of them.

    1) They use latex b/c rubber trees are a very common export and are very cheap.

    3) What causes it? Latex comes from the rubber tree. Just like allergies to any other tree products, from bananas to pollen, it's not really clear what causes it. Some people are just allergic to different things. The protein in rubber can cause an allergic reaction in some people. But of course that milky fluid from the tree is mixed during processing into ';latex';. You could be allergic to the latex or your could be allergic to the mixture. People are a lot less allergic to certain products than others. I bet you aren't allergic to tires. And there are different allergies to it--most people have a form of dermatitis.

However as the number of people with latex allergies has shot up so there are numerous products on the market that are latex free. Most places have just as many non-latex gloves as latex.

As for finding a mask though--that's a little more difficult. To keep the price low, most places use the cheapest material possible. After all you are only going to wear this once.

I'm not sure which exact mask you are going for but why not just paint your face? Why use a mask in the first place? White paint and some black should be able to make it.

    Prosthetics and latex masks?

I'm looking for some wicked-looking latex masks that will fit to your face and move with your mouth, (facial expressions). Nothing funny, like old lady masks, but like scary, like gargoyles and stuff. Also, I like Reel Fx's (Dr. Phil and Monsterella Nichols) Gargoyle, but I want hands (gloves) that look awesome and also move with your real hand, making it seem like the glove is really your hand. Any websites, ideas, or anything? If you know of a website that will take masks requests, that would be awesome too! Thanks!Prosthetics and latex masks?
It is awfully late in the season to try and get a custom mask made. I believe either Reel or Cinema Secrets has hands to match their masks. I've also seen some Mario Chiodo hands out there. Visit as many of your local Halloween and costume shops to find what you're looking for.

Making a latex Batgirl mask and costume.?

I am planning on making a latex Batgirl mask for a costume and I have a few questions.

Would a latex colorant make the latex dry to a solid opaque color? I want the mask to be all black. Will I need to paint over it too, or will just the colorant work? When I put the colorant in the latex how much do I use? Will it affect the latex's strength?

This is what I will use: http://www.monstermakers.com/cgi-bin/monstershop/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=thispage%26amp;thispage=page13.html%26amp;ORDER_ID=508396022

What do I use as a mold release in the plaster mold when I put the latex in? Will Sealube mold release work?

I have a problem with the material I got for the gloves and the boots I bought. The material is a bright marigold yellow made of glossy vinyl and the boots are a mustard yellow made of a matte pleather. Is there a way to paint the boots? do you think the latex mask paint will work? Could they also be covered with perma-wet so they are glossy like the gloves?

    For a novice:

Easiest way is to buy two things: 32oz bottle of liquid latex and a styrene mask.

The liquid latex MUST be the kind you buy from a makeup store. The kind that is bought at a hardware store contains ammonia and is dangerous if it comes in contact with skin.

The mask is the base which you must vaseline over before applying the liquid latex (or it will stick on permanently). The mask must be made of styrene so the dry latex will peel right off of it. Some masks are made from a hardened fabric; don't use this at all. FYI: Liquid latex does not come off clothing!

You have to apply the latex with a makeup brush IN LAYERS. You can't speed-up the job with a blow-dryer because the heat melts right thru the dried latex. Waiting for each layer to dry is an arduous process which is lengthened if each layer is a heavy glop of latex, so keep it thin. Fair warning: Only professional grade makeup remover will take off the latex from the brush.

Apply the latex however you want forming whatever face you're aiming for. Remember the back of your latex masterpiece will take on the shape of the styrene mask, and those are made to fit a generic type of face frame. So if you have prominent facial features( such as big nose, no cheek bones or pointed chin) , the mask will not fit on your face.

This was the short-cut version, but the professional way is to make a mold of your face then build clay around the plaster model of your face and coat over it with the latex. Extremely expensive, messy and a total labour of love. Don't recommend it unless you see a live demonstration of it. Good luck and have fun with it!How can I make my own latex halloween mask?
