Why are halloween masks and other things made of latex?

Im really kind of getting mad now because the stuff i want to get is latex (i.e. masks and other things). I am trying to find a slipknot mask but every one that i have seen says made of latex. Its now starting to get annoying so i have 3 questions.

    1) Why do they use latex in masks and other things (like gloves)?

    2) Does anyone know where i can find Slipknot masks or any halloween masks that are non latex? Also would it be possible to go to a halloween shop and get one custom made?

    3) What causes the allergic reaction to latex?

And if your wondering, Yes i am allergic to latex.

Feel free to answer as many of the questions you know or answer all of em.Anymore info you need just ask.Why are halloween masks and other things made of latex?
Well I can answer a couple of them.

    1) They use latex b/c rubber trees are a very common export and are very cheap.

    3) What causes it? Latex comes from the rubber tree. Just like allergies to any other tree products, from bananas to pollen, it's not really clear what causes it. Some people are just allergic to different things. The protein in rubber can cause an allergic reaction in some people. But of course that milky fluid from the tree is mixed during processing into ';latex';. You could be allergic to the latex or your could be allergic to the mixture. People are a lot less allergic to certain products than others. I bet you aren't allergic to tires. And there are different allergies to it--most people have a form of dermatitis.

However as the number of people with latex allergies has shot up so there are numerous products on the market that are latex free. Most places have just as many non-latex gloves as latex.

As for finding a mask though--that's a little more difficult. To keep the price low, most places use the cheapest material possible. After all you are only going to wear this once.

I'm not sure which exact mask you are going for but why not just paint your face? Why use a mask in the first place? White paint and some black should be able to make it.

    Prosthetics and latex masks?

I'm looking for some wicked-looking latex masks that will fit to your face and move with your mouth, (facial expressions). Nothing funny, like old lady masks, but like scary, like gargoyles and stuff. Also, I like Reel Fx's (Dr. Phil and Monsterella Nichols) Gargoyle, but I want hands (gloves) that look awesome and also move with your real hand, making it seem like the glove is really your hand. Any websites, ideas, or anything? If you know of a website that will take masks requests, that would be awesome too! Thanks!Prosthetics and latex masks?
It is awfully late in the season to try and get a custom mask made. I believe either Reel or Cinema Secrets has hands to match their masks. I've also seen some Mario Chiodo hands out there. Visit as many of your local Halloween and costume shops to find what you're looking for.

Making a latex Batgirl mask and costume.?

I am planning on making a latex Batgirl mask for a costume and I have a few questions.

Would a latex colorant make the latex dry to a solid opaque color? I want the mask to be all black. Will I need to paint over it too, or will just the colorant work? When I put the colorant in the latex how much do I use? Will it affect the latex's strength?

This is what I will use: http://www.monstermakers.com/cgi-bin/monstershop/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=thispage%26amp;thispage=page13.html%26amp;ORDER_ID=508396022

What do I use as a mold release in the plaster mold when I put the latex in? Will Sealube mold release work?

I have a problem with the material I got for the gloves and the boots I bought. The material is a bright marigold yellow made of glossy vinyl and the boots are a mustard yellow made of a matte pleather. Is there a way to paint the boots? do you think the latex mask paint will work? Could they also be covered with perma-wet so they are glossy like the gloves?

Any information at all will help, are there any websites that give information or design ideas and special effect ideas? How can I make my own latex halloween mask?
    For a novice:

Easiest way is to buy two things: 32oz bottle of liquid latex and a styrene mask.

The liquid latex MUST be the kind you buy from a makeup store. The kind that is bought at a hardware store contains ammonia and is dangerous if it comes in contact with skin.

The mask is the base which you must vaseline over before applying the liquid latex (or it will stick on permanently). The mask must be made of styrene so the dry latex will peel right off of it. Some masks are made from a hardened fabric; don't use this at all. FYI: Liquid latex does not come off clothing!

You have to apply the latex with a makeup brush IN LAYERS. You can't speed-up the job with a blow-dryer because the heat melts right thru the dried latex. Waiting for each layer to dry is an arduous process which is lengthened if each layer is a heavy glop of latex, so keep it thin. Fair warning: Only professional grade makeup remover will take off the latex from the brush.

Apply the latex however you want forming whatever face you're aiming for. Remember the back of your latex masterpiece will take on the shape of the styrene mask, and those are made to fit a generic type of face frame. So if you have prominent facial features( such as big nose, no cheek bones or pointed chin) , the mask will not fit on your face.

This was the short-cut version, but the professional way is to make a mold of your face then build clay around the plaster model of your face and coat over it with the latex. Extremely expensive, messy and a total labour of love. Don't recommend it unless you see a live demonstration of it. Good luck and have fun with it!How can I make my own latex halloween mask?

  • Is foam latex good for sculpting your own props (masks/fake noses, ect.)?

I wanted to make my own prosthetics for my Halloween costume out of some kind of sculptable material- like a putty of some sort that you can shape like a piece of clay, and dries relatively light-weight so you can put it on your face with spirit gum or some other glue.

for my costume I wanted to make the stuff that grows out of the Davy Jones characters from Pirates of the Caribbean (barnacles, sea shells, crab legs, seaweed) and I don't really have a mold for anything like that...

so does anyone know if foam latex is good for that kind of stuff??? and where you could buy it?

thanks a lot! :)Is foam latex good for sculpting your own props (masks/fake noses, ect.)?
Foam latex doesn't work like you describe. The closest product that does would be either nose putty or mortician's wax (also called eyebrow wax). these are often used for scar effects but I've never had good luck with them as they get too pliable with body heat.

In order to make your own prosthetics you would first need a life casting of your face. You can do this with professional stuff like moulage but I've done it rough and dirty with plaster bandage strips. You then pour plaster into the casting to get a positive mold of your face.

Using clay you would then build up the areas you want to create on the positive casting, like barnacles and stuff. Then you would make another casting over the clay to create a negative casting.

Insert the positive casting (cleaned of its clay barnacles) into the negative casting and then pour foam latex into the cavity. The latex should expand into the empty spaces and when cured will be your prosthetic.

Latex used in Art masking fluid...?

Are there many different latexes out there that are used in Masking fluid ?? Derived from different sorts of rubber trees ?? Or is the masking fluid the same no matter what company you are talking about, Winsor %26amp; Newton, or any other... Or do they all go through a strict handling on a chemical level ???

See.. let me go straight to the point.. I am planning to try and create my own masking fluid. The problem I have is that I cannot find natural rubber latex in a liquid form ANYWHERE... I've written dozen of e-mails to different companies asking for this. I got a positive reply asking me to give him technical requirements of that latex in liquid form. WHAT SHOULD I TELL HIM ??? A special formula of content ?? Exact details of every proton in that latex ??

How much is it necessary for an artist who simply wants to create his own masking fluid ?????Latex used in Art masking fluid...?
Speaking as an artist, I think you might get better answers to your question if you post in a category for science or chemistry.

I just use what comes out of the bottle.

Burger King Masks: Vinyl vs. Latex?

Anyone know the difference in the two? The latex is a full face, but seems flimsy and unauthentic. The vinly seems more rigid, but only half a mask, not full face. Anyone know of a full face mask with a bit more rigidness? Or, any owners of the Deluxe BK mask? Opinions?Burger King Masks: Vinyl vs. Latex?
Both originate from the same materials, and you could search the variations online. I'm most curious about why it even matters?Burger King Masks: Vinyl vs. Latex?
They seem to be two very different things...

Latex is natural rubber. Vinyl is fabric backed PVC.

Latex stretches more to it will mold to your face better. Can you get one that is skin tight on the inside? If so I would get the latex. Just don't get oil on it. Oil rots latex/rubber stuff.

I'm looking for someone who's experienced in making latex/ gel like masks.?

For Halloween, I want part of my costume to be a head of me. Not in a narcissistic way. How might I go about molding my face and making a gel mask from it? I don't intend to wear the mask nor will it go on anybody's face. I know it can be done, I've definitely seen it before. Any suggestions?I'm looking for someone who's experienced in making latex/ gel like masks.?
Molding of heads is done safely with a moulage gel that is melted to a thick jelly and painted on the face with straws in the nose for breathing. It is fairly expensive, but can be reused. It is available on line from theatrical supply houses and places that support wound simulation activities - like making burns for an emergency drill. The great advantage of the gel is that it goes on warm and sets as it cools and does not damage the skin, while plaster starts cool and gets quite hot and uncomfortable and is alkali on the skin. Latex can be painted on the skin and build up layers, but it sticks to the skin (having to be peeled off) and is weak and has to be backed with plaster to retain its shape. It is also nearly impossible to use latex plus the plaster over the whole face, so it has to be done in sections.

If you have any experience with latex masks...?

Okay, lol, this is somewhat of a strange question, but if you are a costume designer as myself, you wont think so.

Weve all seen How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And us interested in costtuming I am sure have researched how in the world they made Jim Careys face look so amazing in it. They used latex and molded it onhis face.

At my high school, we are doing a musical, somewhat like the Hoodwinked movie, which includes this 3 pigs and the Big Bad Wolf.

I really want to do a mask using the same Grinch concept for the big bad wolf, so if you have any experience or just knoledge in the feild, I have a question.

There may be a few who get some pleasure from a veil but it's not really kinky if it's what every woman wears. Once upon a time, corsets were worn every day and were nothing special. Now they are the height of fetishism. The number of men with panty hose fetishes has gone up considerably the past few years because the number of women wearing panty hose all the time has dropped.

How do you make RUBBER HALLOWEEN masks (not disposable hollywood latex)?

I'd like a link or information on making RUBBER HALLOWEEN masks like you buy at WalMart or The Spirit Shop on Halloween. I've found tons on Hollywood Latex that's good for one use - I want to make the kind that slip on and off and aren't glued to the face. How do you make RUBBER HALLOWEEN masks (not disposable hollywood latex)?
First, latex makeup appliances that glue to the face are good for far more than just one use.

To make a mask, first you must make a lifecasting of the person to be wearing it (in the case of commercial masks, they use a generic form). Make a plaster positive from the lifecasting to serve as your base. Sculpt on top of the positive lifecasting the mask you want. Make a plaster mold of the sculpture. Fill the mold with latex rubber and remove your mask. Then comes painting.

Of course, there are detailed steps and instructions I've omitted, but here's a link that will tell you more.

Will a mask with medium-thin latex rip easy?

Hey i'm maybe think of buying a Michael Myers mask and the seller say's it has medium-thin latex and i'm not that good with mask's and latex and stuff and the mask is finished and complete it's been painted and haired please HELP!Will a mask with medium-thin latex rip easy?
medium thin latex?? I have been in the business for 17 years, and I have never heard of medium thin latex. Is this an original mask or one that was reproduced by the seller? I would really hate to see you get ripped off. Have you seen pictures of it? Normal thickness for a high quality latex mask that won't tear easily is from 3/32 - 1/8th. Have the seller measure the thickness of the latex, if its under the measurements I gave you than it is more than likely not a collectors, and was made at home (it should also be tagged with a stamp on the back of the inside of the neck embedded in the latex) How much are they asking? Ask the seller what the logo is imprinted in the latex, let me know and I can tell you exactly what it is worth or if it is a knock off.

In response to the added details, I actually know Arnie Goldman the owner of Monster Makers in Ohio, and I do know that he sells quality products for mask making. So it is a replica, I thought that it might be, I would say the price should be around $25.00, however if you are wanting the licensed product collector's (you can get through Morris, Don Post Masks, Cinema secrets,) for around $40-$65...or even on Ebay. If you are wanting to wear it and you think it looks like the real deal than I would purchase it, when not wearing it you should coat the inside with talcum powder and place on a styrofoam head, this will hold the.shape and also keep the mask from sticking. It sounds like the maker took into consideration that the mask will be worn and has re inforced the edging, there should also be a slit on the back of the mask so to aid in putting on and taking off the mask and relieving stress for tear.

hope I helped you.........Sorry if the answer came across as pompous but I do know what I am talking about.....Enjoy!Will a mask with medium-thin latex rip easy?
What a pompous first answer. Assuming you want a mask to wear to look like Mike Myers and not a collector's item once worn by him, a medium thin latex mask is going to be stronger than you would expect from the thinness but weak enough that it requires care in removing. Theatrical and movie masks and prostheses normally have tissue thin edges and are held with spirit gum adhesive. Unless removed with considerable care, the tissue edge tears. I would expect that a ';medium thin'; edge would be stronger, like a piece of typing paper in thickness and therefore harder to conceal in photo closeups, but if you are transforming to Mike, you probably don't expect to fool anyone.

you do not want to wear the mask if it is latex and you have an allergy believe me! if you have ever had an allergic reaction and had the pain %26amp; suffering that goes with it you would not even be asking this question - DO NOT DO IT!!

How about green vegetable dye - works great for me.I have an allergy to latex on my face and i want to where a mask is there any thing i could put on or in it?
You don't want to wear a latex mask. If you MUST wear a mask, make it cloth. Keep in mind that I don't know what you want the mask for.
you want to wear a latex mask? If you are allergic then you cannot wear one. If you keep using things with latex you will eventually go into anaphaltic shock. Be smart!
no, do not wear a mask with latex in it, the stuff is airborne too, can get in your lungs and cause a serious problem.
There isn't, no. A prime example of latex allergy is John Rhys-Davies, who played the dwarf Gimli from Lord of the Rings. He's allergic to latex as well, and the latex mask and makeup basically ate into his face. A good portion of the time it's not even him playing the part, because it affected him so badly. By the end of the third movie, you can see how red and puffy his face and eyes are - There's one particular scene where it looks like his face is sloughing off.

Doing it just once won't be too horrible, depending on how sensitive you are and how much you want to suffer afterward, but I still wouldn't recommend it. If I were you, I'd try finding a mask that isn't made of latex.

How to store/preserve my latex/rubber Halloween masks and decorations?

~Lightly dust inside of mask with talcum powder after wearing. This will help absorb moisture and aid in keeping your mask fresh.

~Cover your mask or prop with a plastic bag before storing.

~Clean paper should be stuffed in a mask to aid in retaining original form.

~Avoid displaying or storing your purchase in direct sunlight or heat. Extended period of time in harsh elements will greatly reduce the longevity of the latex.

Ball up newspaper and put inside masks to help them keep there shape while being stored. Place them in a container that is cool and dark as already mentioned. Most masks will hold up for years if treated well. But some latex props will rot no matter what you do. So gentle handling is the best prevention.

  • How to make a latex monster mask?

    Hello everyone,

I want to create one of those full over-the-head masks that you normally only see during Halloween, I've recently started to collect them.

Anyway I've searched everywhere on making a full monster mask and I only seem to find bits and pieces of information and none of the videos I find seem to relate what I'm trying to do

I've figured basically everything else out but the biggest thing is, I can't find out how to make a mold for the mask to pour the latex in.

So could anyone describe that step to me or point me to a site that actually describes it with detail [pictures or videos would be great too]

And any other tips to help me out would be great :D

Thanks! How to make a latex monster mask?
    Hi,

I've just started a company making masks similar to this - we actually do foam masks rather than full over the head latex masks but the principle is the same. Have a look at http://www.kangena.co.uk

    Here's some bullet point steps:

    1. Get a bust to base your sculpt on - make sure it is a full sized one

    2. Get some water based clay with which to sculpt (its easier than oil based clay but you may prefer to use that)

    3. apply clay to bust to create the mask that you want

    4. cover any areas which aren't covered in clay with vaseline

    5. spray with furniture polish

    6. make a 2 part plaster mould (probably best to google for this for specific instructions as its fairly tricky)

    7. seperate mould then remove bust and clay - clean up mould with a toothbrush and water

    8. join mould and bind together to hold it in place

    9. fill with latex and leave for an hour or two based on thickness you want

    10. empty mould, seperate and remove your mask

    11. paint as required with acrylic paints mixed with prosthetic adhesive

or if that sounds like a lot of hard work give us a shout and we can make a custom mask for you!

Because the devices are Licensed as Prescription Only Devices you just cannot go around and do much ';do it yourself';. You really have to work with the providers of the devices to your when you get them with a prescription. Every device that I personally have seen, and I have seen over 50 has some sort of clear silicone rubber as an sealant between the hard plastic and the body! I will look around and check further thought and add on to this answer!

You might use a hypo-allergenic cream on it you can get it a Wallmart over in the makeup section under Almay brand! It is one of the few hypo-allergenic over the shelf lines you can buy!

    Good Sleeping!

APSCPAP mask without latex and silicone???? Does it exist?
Your best resource would be wherever you got the original mask.
I worked at a home health care company for 4 years and all of the masks that we sold were of some sort of plastic with some silicone for comfort. You should have talked to the provider of your machine to find something more suitable. Also, i know that when i was working for the home health care company, the machine is only rented to the patient by the insurance company and the insurace company doesnt purchase that piece of equipment for the patient until a few month trial period has passed, so if you sold that cpap machine you may be paying the health care company for that machine or going without one because your insurance wont pay for another one for several years.

    Making a latex batgirl mask.?

I am going to get a head start on my halloween costume. A couple questions...

Can you add a colorant right into the latex? If so what do I use, and how much? Or is it best to paint it? If I paint it, can I just use a latex based paint or something cheap?

How much latex should I purchase? I have 2 16 fl oz things or this stuff

How do I get rid of the latex odor from masks?

I use masks for drama and find the smell overbearing when people try to wear themHow do I get rid of the latex odor from masks?
You really can't. Your nose is so close to the material that you will always have that smell.

Keeping it in the open air and letting it ';AIR OUT'; will help some after awhile. But it will still be there.

If the smell really bothers you, try putting a smell that is stronger than the latex that you like under your nose. Perfume perhaps? Or maybe scrape an fresh orange and rub some of the orange oils under (not in) your nose.

My husband (he's a dentist) does this when a patient is wearing too much perfume or has bad breath so bad he can't stand it. He puts a really strong orange smelling lubricant on one of those cotton face masks to deal with the bad smells.

TRY RUBBIG THEM WITH AN ANTIBACTERIAL HAND CLEANER LIKE THE WET WIPES SOME OF THEM HAVE LIKE A POWDER SMELL OR RUB A LIGHT COAT OF BABY POWDER ON THEM

  • Latex masks - Do they get hot/make the wearer hot if worn for an extended period of time?

For the first time ever, I'm going to a Halloween party (I've lived a sheltered life). I found a mask online I think I'm going to purchase but it's latex and covers pretty much the entire face; sans eyes, nose holes and mouth. I want to buy something I can wear all night and not something that's going to be an oven in a few minutes. So, does it get hot or should I be comfortable for a few hours?Latex masks - Do they get hot/make the wearer hot if worn for an extended period of time?
It will absolutely get hot. Don't forget about your breath and sweat combining in there...the latex acts like a petrie dish and it will start to smell. I have an old Don Post latex mask that is incredible but can't be worn for more than 30 minutes at a time. If you do wear the mask, bring paper towels to wipe out the inside near the mouth and nostrills when it starts to get hot and sweaty. If you will be indoors with alot of people, it will get hot fast. Go outside and take breaks with the mask off. I would not get drunk while wearing the mask...if you don't get it off in time, it'll be messy. Instead of a full head mask, they do sell face only masks that stay secured with an elastic band that goes around the head. Obviously, it is not as good, but you need to decide if you are willing to suffer for your costume or would you rather be comfortable.Latex masks - Do they get hot/make the wearer hot if worn for an extended period of time?
YES. We have a clown mask.... lets just say that you put it on for five minutes and you're dead. I wouldn't go with latex. If you MUST, put something in there with you to absorb sweat, cuz they get really gross and slimy after a little bit.

How can I get wrinkles and creases out of latex halloween masks?

I recently bought a leatherface mask from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it has really bad creases and it's bent funny because of packaging, is there any way I can take them out? Thanks. How can I get wrinkles and creases out of latex halloween masks?
If it fits you face tightly (and you can see out of it), put it on and surn the net for several hours. This has two advantages: First, you want it in the shape of your face. Second, the your body heat will help relax the mask. With that in mind you might want to suak it in hot water, quickly dry it, and then put it on. That will help speed the process.

Is it okay to wear a liquid latex mask overnight?

I'm going to be an elderly woman for Halloween and I've heard it takes hours to make the masks complete. I'm going to school in it for a Halloween contest, but i only have little time in the morning. (I wake up at 6am and my bus comes at 7, and my mom needs to be to work by 7:30 on the other side of town from my school) I hardly get any sleep as it is so maybe 5 or 5:30 would be the earliest i would be able to wake up and actually have my mom to help me because she hates getting up earlier than she has to.

I was wondering if I would be able to apply the mask the night before with my family and plenty of time available then let it harden completely and go to sleep without any impressions that would ruin the wrinkles or further problems in the morning.

Thank you for your time!Is it okay to wear a liquid latex mask overnight?
Yes, there is no problem with wearing latex for a long time - liquid latex or latex clothing. However, sleeping might cause the latex to peal off as it rubs the pillow... What about one of those full-head ';female'; latex masks?

How can I hide letters from foamed latex mask?

I have a custom made foamed latex mask which has small letters. I really want to hide the letters. How can I hide(remove? or melt?) the letters without hurting my mask? It does not have to be perfect. The small letters are clear now. I just want to make the letters are not clear so people can not read it. I do not want to cut the mask. Any ideas? Thanks. How can I hide letters from foamed latex mask?
where does it have small letters? Inside or out? Somewhere conspicuous like on the middle of the nose, or small and nearly invisible?

Are the letter pressed in or are they raised? In the latter case I'd just carefully cut them off with a scalpel. In the first case you probably could fill them in with something of the same color as the background (like plasticine). If they have a different color than the surround you could paint them with the color of the surround.

You'd best post a photo so we know what your problem is. Your description is a bit too vague. How can I hide letters from foamed latex mask?
Thanks for the pic, I only saw it now. I think if you melt it it will show up more than it does now. I would try to fill them with silicone. Look in an hardware store if you find silicone or caulking which is of a similar color than your mask. Report Abuse

Put a tiny amount on your mask. Before touching it wet your finger with a dishwashing soap/water solution, this will prevent the silicone sticking to your finger. rub even. Try somewhere inconspicous first. Report Abuse

I want to buy a foam latex mask for halloween but I don't know if it will turn out right?

Last halloween, I wanted to do a foam latex appliance thing for a costume, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I got http://amphigory.com/latex_appliance_and鈥?/a> that. I was able to put it on my head just fine and cover it in makeup, but it was still an obvious appliance. I couldn't blend in the edges enough to make it look real, like in the photo.

This year I have more money and I want to do a full latex mask, like the ones here http://screamteamorder.stores.yahoo.net/鈥?/a> (I want to do ';Shredd';), but I don't know how I will be able to match my skin color perfectly and blend in the edges, plus I don't know how well I'll be able to paint the mask to make it look real. I really don't want to waste any money, so does anyone here have experience or tips for this? Thanks!I want to buy a foam latex mask for halloween but I don't know if it will turn out right?
You should look for a pro makeup artist in your area and just have them do it for you...with that said, if you can find someone that just got out of school they would probably still have a lot of supplies like liquid latex etc...and be freshly trained... Anyone who has been trained in Professional Makeup Artistry should have been trained in prosthetics and that way if you have them do it for you they would be able to blend the edges while applying the latex. Depending on where you live, there may be a makeup school where you can go to and post a ';job offer'; for a student to do your makeup, a lot of times that student is looking for experience and will do most jobs for little or no cost. I went to Joe Blasco Makeup Center in Orlando, FL...there is also one in LA...but there were students from all over. I'd give it a try, less work for you and you'll be able to get your look exact. Post an ad on www.craigslist.com under the gigs category, all of the makeup artists I know check that site for jobs. Trust me, you'll be able to find someone to do it.

Need info on latex mask making/casting?

ok,so ive been a tattoo artist for over three years....and im growing tired of it....its fun,but im tired of doing the same freaking tattoos over, and over again....very rarely do i do anything challenging....anyway,tattooing isnt my main source of income...so im thinking of dropping out for awhile and explore a totally new art outlet....and im kinda of a nerd, and my interest are leaning towards making latex/foam masks....theres a starter kit ill probably order from monster makers ,but im wonder if anybody has any experiance doing this?....especially with the moulding, casting and all that....im kinda lost...i know i start with clay and sculpting...but what are the steps after that?....anything is aprrieciated?

after some of the sh*t masks ive seen at stores ive decided to make a move and try it out...lolNeed info on latex mask making/casting?
this is the best book ever written on the subject. it covers everything from making life casts, masks made of leather, latex, plaster, even frendly plastic and paper mache, as well as some products I've never heard of. Suppliers are in the back, (but I don't know if they are still valid) IT also covers paining the mask and rooting the hair.

The Prop Builder's Mask-Making Handbook by Thurston James

if it's not in here, it shouldn't be tried.

After buying the book, my best advice is invest in a good face form for proper positioning of the eyes, nose, ect, or buy alginate to make a casting of someone's face. (when making an alginate casting to use as a mold, the model needs to breathe through straws while it sets. This scares some people, so I would buy a pre-made form.

After you sculpt your ';face'; a mold needs to made and it's the hollow casting that will come of it that will make the mask.Need info on latex mask making/casting?
Yes, the poster above is correct.

Is it good to put a latex mask on and have liquid latex on my face?

see its for halloween, I'm being a zombie and I want it took look as good as possible. so what I'm doing is taking an old latex skull mask and cutting off some of the piece's to put on my face(with spirit gum) to give it like I was decaying for a long time. and then with liquid latex give my face, neck and arms some more decaying spots, that are slowly decaying...so is it okay for me to have a latex mask and a liquid latex on my face?Is it good to put a latex mask on and have liquid latex on my face?
Liquid latex on your face is a very bad idea. It can be very irritating and hell to get off. If you want to use latex, form the decay spots and let the latex dry, and then attach them with spirit gum, the way you do the mask. Or, and this works much better than you might think: you can wet kleenex and make it into a sort of past, color it, and apply it to the skin. Looks really good, easy to do, non-irritating, and easy to remove. Is it good to put a latex mask on and have liquid latex on my face?
powder from the latex may make you sick. be careful, it also may get into your skin pores and clog them up and make pimples worse or grow more.

    Latex mask making help!?

hello im going to be going to a special fx school next fall, but there's this talent scholarship i want to try and get to help me out since the school's really expensive. anyways i have a few months to get a portfolio going and i decided im going to try and make a few latex masks. i looked on the internet and ';The Monster Makers'; have a few mask making kits. i was probably going to get the ';$200.00'; basic kit that makes one mask, but i wanted to know if its worth it or not. should i just buy the materials seperate off another site? or is the $200 kit going to really help me out?

if youre a professional mask maker or have done a few and have some kind of knowledge on this stuff it'd help me out a lot! i just dont want to waste $200 bucks on something i could be doing for a lot less you know? sites can EASILY rip off someone with no knowledge like me! lol

    here's the kit link

    http://www.monstermakers.com/product/basic-latex-mask-making-kit.html

thanks for any answers :)Latex mask making help!?
After reviewing your kit it looks like a pretty good deal to me especially since it comes with a handbook and comes with everything you need in one complete package. I don't think you could do much better. $200 is pretty cheap considering what you get. Like it or not any kind of sculpture or special FX material is going to cost a lot, especially if you are using rubber or doing any kind of replication. Private school costs dwarf any costs you will have in materials, so think of it as earning money for school.

My recommendation would be to go for it. If you want to check the prices go to the douglas and sturgess website. They are a company specifically for mold making, sculpture and special FX.

    Latex mask supplies? ?
If you are going to build a mold on your face to make a master to build the mask, DON'T USE PLASTER!! Plaster of Paris and similar products. These are damaging to the skin and get hot while setting and it shinks making the experience extremely panic forming. The proper stuff to use is alginate which a gel that is heated to liquid and cools in place. Unfortunately, your chances of finding it locally are small unless you have a theatrical supply place in town.

Actually, latex masks can be built on the face if you take care of eyebrow hair are not going to take forever to build the basic mask. I used to build prostheses for stage work. A hair drier on low to speed drying and constant conversation with the person if not yourself will keep things comfortable. Build one on part of your face first to see how thick you need to make it.

  • Latex mask?(can be answered by Slipknot fans,Halloween celebrators, and people who know about latex).?

Im really kind of getting annoyed now because the stuff i want to get is latex (i.e. masks and other things).

Feel free to answer as many of the questions you know or answer all of em.Anymore info you need just ask.

Latex mask?(can be answered by Slipknot fans,Halloween celebrators, and people who know about latex).?
    1) Latex is cheap, flexible, paintable, etc. Latex allergies are a relatively new phenomenon.

    2) You probably won't find any commercially available flexible masks that are non-latex. It simply isn't economical. You might find hard plastic or pvc masks, for example Storm Trooper or Darth Vader helmets. Halloween shops, especially the temporary ones that pop up, are designed to sell retail products already produced, not create custom. You'd have to go to a mask-maker for that (I've linked one for you). Be prepared to spend quite a bit. And it is probably too late to custom order a mask for this year.

    3) Sorry, no idea. Latex mask?(can be answered by Slipknot fans,Halloween celebrators, and people who know about latex).?
    1) Natural Latex Rubber is cheap and easy to obtain, has a fast manufacture time and is easy to paint, so it is the most commonly used material for pull over masks and other novelty items. Natural Latex (processed from the Hevea/';rubber'; tree) has been used for making Halloween masks for decades. For several hundred years, masks were made in the theater world from papier-m芒ch茅 and other materials, but natural latex was the first rubber commercially available (via Charles Goodyear's accidental vulcanization) and was used to make a wide variety of consumer items.

Latex rubber was put to use to make flexible masks and rubber prosthetics (pieces of fake skin) that fit actors with precision. The emerging film industry adopted latex as it quickly outgrew the laborious cotton and collodion methods that makeup artist Jack Pierce used to create the Frankenstein Monster. Even today, foam latex is widely used in makeup FX for prosthetics.

Today, there are quite a few synthetic rubber alternatives to natural latex. Vinyl is used for quite a few Halloween masks, notably by French mask manufacturer Cesar who specialize in political figures. Neoprene is also widely used for masks. Nitrile is used for gloves, but I suppose it could be used for masks as well. Silicone rubbers have been radically improved in the last 5 or 6 years and are now used for prosthetics and pull over masks.

As a special effects makeup artist, I recommend silicone items for people with latex allergies. They are far more difficult to produce and expensive, but far more flexible. Strangely enough, the presence of latex inhibits the curing of silicone! Many artists who mysteriously can't get a batch of silicone to set realize that they were wearing latex gloves or used a latex rubber mixing bowl or spatula to stir it.

    2) As mentioned above, French mask manufacturer Cesar uses vinyl, but they mostly produce political figure caricatures. A local dance supply or novelty shop may have ties to local makeup artists or theatrical prop/makeup artists. Special effects artists are much more rare. Like other SPFX artists, I do custom work (frequently via mail), but this can take a bit of time, and copyrighted work needs to be licensed before being produced.

The best masks and prosthetics require a ';life cast'; to be made by a makeup artist. This is a three dimensional copy of your face (or entire head.) This duplicate head is used to build the mask or prosthetic on, thus the finished piece fits the person exactly. You also end up with a gypsum copy of your head, which is a cool and unusual thing to have around the house.

    3) The jury is still out on why the allergic reaction occurs, especially the type 4 potentially fatal reaction. Some argue over proteins left in the latex, some point to the powder placed in gloves to aid in donning them acting as a sensitizing agent, others suspect the ammonia used in processing latex and the chlorination sometimes used for stabilization and other processing chemicals. Unfortunately these chemicals may also be present in neoprene, vinyl (PVC), polyurethane, and other co-polymers used as replacements for latex gloves. We don't know. There is no solid proof but evidence and contradictory evidence for all of the above.

The one thing that is certain is that silicone is the least reactive chemical substances you can find anywhere, surgical implants are wrapped in the stuff!

    I can't see your link.

You are asking about Special Makeup Effects. If indeed it was latex, it is either a liquid latex that you buy from a makeup supplier or foam latex. Foam latex is used to make a three dimensional prosthetic (aka appliance). Think of movies with Eddie Murphy featuring work from artist Rick Baker; that is foam latex. More recently, prosthetics in silicone are producing some really exciting results: think of Eddie Murphy as the old Chinese man in Norbit.

    Greek and Roman Helmets

The helmets I have made have been constructed of paper mach茅.

    Basic formula is as follows:

Cut about 30 long strips of heavy construction paper.

Arrange 16 of the strips in a circular pattern where the center of all strips coincide.

Lock down the center by any means possible.

Pull the ends of the paper strips down to form a dome.

Use the remaining paper strips to form a cross-hatch pattern. This creates the helmet structure.

Cut up a handful of newspaper strips. (Sunday comic pages are often heavier than ordinary newspaper stock.)

Dip in a solution of water and wall-paper paste.

Cover the helmet with newspaper strips.

When dry, fill in any indentations and cover again.

After you are satisfied with the basic shape, you can cut the eye/nose/mouth holes and then add the extra touches.

An additional technique I've found that works great is using speckling paste (the indoor plaster for filling in holes) to smooth out the helmet. You end up with a very smooth, very strong accessory -- it just looks fantastic.

Cheers!Making a latex batgirl mask and other accessories.?
You can get everything you need from the Monster Makers web site. You'll probably need two quarts of latex, (At least)

First sculpt out of oil based clay and then make plaster molds. Pour in the latex (Slowly, less chance of air bubbles) and let sit for about 20 minutes (For the small things.). For the cowl you can pour the latex in and work it around by constantly moving the mold. Turn it slowly (The air bubble thing again.) For the body parts you can pour it in then brush it about to make it even then build it up in layers from there.

You'll want to use alginate for the life cast. Plaster heats up when it dries so use alginate then back it with plaster. When the alginate sets you'll have a negative so mix up more plaster and pour it into the alginate to make a positive to sculpt on.When you make you're molds, put down your first layer of plaster and build it out unilt it smooths out enough to add burlap. Put the burlap in plaster and put it on the mold then add more plaster. This will strengthen the mold.

You can tint the latex which with what your doing will probably be best. You can always paint in details. Usually when I paint latex I spray it down with 3m Super adhesive then paint. It helps the paint adhear better.

Since this will be a one shot deal, (I'm guessing) you can use plaster of paris for everything. Normally you use the other if your making multiple castings. But you could still get two or three from regular plaster before it starts to break down to much.

This is kinda a nut shell answer just to give you an idea of what you're looking at. The Monster Makers (I know I keep bringing them up but I've put a few orders in and have always had quick delivery and they know their stuff.) also has tutorials on how to do things as well. You can also check out the Monster List of Halloween Projects.

    Latex mask question?

is it okay to paint a mask with a spray paint can?Latex mask question?
Hi, I wouldn't use a general spray paint as the paint will not be flexible enough when dry.

Instead, use acrylic paint and add some liquid latex in with the paint - this will give you a flexible paint when dry.

On a lesser scale, you can mix a bit of washing up liquid in with paint for a similar, but not as good quality effect.

Does anybody know how to make a latex mask?

What is the mask for? Why do you need to make it? Can you start with a ';base'; mask and add to it?

As you can see, you question is very broad.

In essence, there are two methods. Pour latex into a mold / or paint it on a form... Or, cut latex sheeting and glue it together.

  • Old Lady for Halloween...how to make wrinkles? Latex mask thing?

I'm going to be an old lady for Halloween (I know it's a bit early) and I'm wondering how I should make wrinkles on my face? I was thinking maybe draw them on with brown/gray eyeliner, but then again, it is Halloween! Why not go the extra mile and use latex face stuff?

And clue as to how to do this? Is it expensive to buy? Easy to do???

Any tips would be appreciated!Old Lady for Halloween...how to make wrinkles? Latex mask thing?
I did this a few years ago and people freaked out. As long as your hair is in curlers with a scarf tied over them, you have a shawl, cane, polyester pants, big corrective shoes- you can go ahead and use brown eye lining pencil like this:

After using white makeup all over your face LIGHTLY (to look pale) look in the mirror, first wrinkle up your forehead - hold it- and use the pencil to follow all the wrinkles. Do this around your eyes and mouth.

Also- make sure your top and pants are 4 sizes bigger than you need, then stuff a bed pillow in your front, and one in your butt- it looks hilarious when you rock back and forth to ';dance';. I also made sure I fell down periodically throughout the night- it was frickin hilarious.Old Lady for Halloween...how to make wrinkles? Latex mask thing?

Where do I go to learn how to make latex masks?

check out the link below.Where do I go to learn how to make latex masks?
Rhino's link is great, and online info is as cheap as it gets. Honestly, moldmaking and latex masks are going to get you in for more than $50 if you really get into it.

Did you just want online resources or classes to go to? If you want to go in person, look for people that will take free help. That way you might get some discards or keep a copy to paint on your own afterward. Check any local maskmaker shops or special effects artists or prop makers.

For starters, add youtube to your list of places to look for how-to info. BTW, if you get interested in the life-casting, take tons of precautions, and learn as much as you can. My best advice it to assist someone or have an experienced person to talk to. It's easy enough to get started, but there's certain things to know, and if you don't, it could get unhealthy or dangerous.Where do I go to learn how to make latex masks?

Is latex used as a mould for a mask or the actual mask?

I want to make a mask but do i use latex as a mould or do i make a seperate mould and use latex as the actual finished mask?Is latex used as a mould for a mask or the actual mask?
you can use the latex itself as the mask, the mould would be made from something totally different.

Besides, latex is very good as a protection against burns, and is actually a cheaper alternative to PVCIs latex used as a mould for a mask or the actual mask?
Latex is used for both. Prostheses added to faces to change shapes of noses or foreheads are all or partly latex which can have a very thin edge that works well with latex.

Latex can also be used to make an excellent soft copy of a carving or clay molding for duplication in other material.

Normally a full mask intended to fit closely to an actors face would be made between two molds, one positive of the actors face and one negative of the outer surface of the mask. If the mask were loose, then the mask might be cast in the mold made of latex. Normally such a large latex would have a plaster backing because it is so flexible and would distort under the weight of the casting material.
No you are better off with plaster to mold with, something more solid
Do you mean a face cast (off a living model) ? If so, you make the life mask with plaster, then use the resultant (negative) cast to pour in a thin layer of latex.

If you've made a mask out of wood, plaster and want to cast your (positive) object, vinamold (which is hot-poured) is a possibility. Once you have the mould, you can fill it with plaster, fibre glass, wax etc.

  • Spray painting a latex mask?

I bought a gas mask today but it is beige ad I need it to be black. what is the best way to paint or spray this? also If I got a permanent black marker would this work?Spray painting a latex mask?
as the item is latex, i would suggest that you buy paint made for rubber or plastic, rather than use your wall paint which may not adhere. Krylon Fusion for plastic is a possible one and comes in an easy to use spray can.

    how to paint:

    1. clean the surface real good with a mild detergent, rinse well and dry. make sure that it is completely dry.

    2. spray on a thin coat, covering it evenly.

    3. let it dry thoroughly and then apply again. applying multiple thin coats of the krylon paint will prevent runs and drips.

I would not use the magic marker as it won't cover uniformly (it will have lighter and darker areas), unless you don't care about this.

  • Is spraying latex paint without a mask dangerous?

I only spray outside. I do about 6-10 houses a summer. I ';backbrush'; almost all of them, so it is not like I am in a fog of spray. I try not to breathe the vapors. If I know it is unavoidable I do wear a mask. Your thoughts? Is spraying latex paint without a mask dangerous?
Repeated exposure over a long period of time may lead to serious side effects. I know this because me fiancee works in pest control and he works around all sorts of chemicals all day, latex paint is also a chemical that you shouldn't breathe in over a long time.Is spraying latex paint without a mask dangerous?
If you do 6 to 10 houses a summer, you're exposing yourself considerably to microscopic particles you can't even see.. and [sad to say] might well be setting yourself up with serious lung problems years up the line. For about $45-60 [paint supply place or welder's supply place] you can get a top of the line protective mask with filters, and write it off as work-related expense at tax-time. Don't assume that because you're not in a ';fog of spray'; that you're safe out there. If you can smell it, you're breathing it in. Lots of old coots suffering with emphysema today are paying for being maskless macho-men 30 years ago.
just get a freakin' mask and flollow the directions. don't be a dumbf**k
use a mask - better safe than sorry

    or better safe than toxic
As a painter myself , I would suggest wearing a mask , otherwise you could turn out like my dad ( now retired) ,He never believed in wearing a mask , and his lungs are no good , he never smoked , only years of paint particles , along with the ammonia ,and many other particles like silicone etc. contained in latex paint . He was very surprised that the exposure to latex has done him more harm than the exposure to all of the lead base paints from the 60's and early 70's..., But of course with the homes we paint there is no spraying outdoors period , mainly to protect the copper roofing , cars , stonework , and other surrounding things that could possibly get painted as well . But anyway I would get the mask if you are unsure as to which is best , go to Sherwin Williams , another paint store and tell them you need a protective mask for spraying latex .

Is spraying latex paint without a mask dangerous?

Is latex body paint and liquid latex used in most mask the same thing?

I need to order latex for a mask I'm making and I wanted to know if liquid latex and body paint latex is pretty much the same. Like will they do the same job.Is latex body paint and liquid latex used in most mask the same thing?
no, latex paint is like acrylic paint (as opposed to oil paint.) It's thin and colored and made for painting. Liquid latex for making masks is thick like a rubber Halloween mask. You brush it on in layers, and then it dries as flexible rubber. call customer service before you order to make sure what you're getting. www . sculpt . com has all that kind of stuff and a great tech support phone line.

Wot would b the best thing to use to stick a latex mask to my face and hair?

I would ask about that at a costume store but be really careful. Some people are highly allergic to latex. Before you glue this mask to your face, maybe you should hold it on your arm for a couple of hours with rubber bands to see if you have a reaction. Good luck!! : )
