A good plot for masked carnival setting?

Im writing a story which is set in a masked carnival but am having trouble thinking of a good plot.


Any ideas?

Fantasy:


A girl picks up a magical mask that allows her to manipulate and control one person at a time. The mask belonged to a secret society and her consequence is death.


Mystery:


A boy was cursed at the carnival 26 years ago, every year, the boy awards a girl with the most beautiful mask in order to break the spell. However, something interferes and girl vanishes and the boy seeks after her.

This has been done before .. I'd recommend to you Edgar Allen Poe .. ';Cask of Amontillado';, ';Masque of the Red Death'; and (not a carnivale experience, but good for ideas) ';Murders in the Rue Morgue';





I don't recommend these for plagarism (and you'll be spotted in a MILISECOND if you try!) but as fodder for ideas .. why and what purpose the masques, etc and build your story from there.
